Michelle David & The True-tones
Funk and soul sensation Michelle David & The True-Tones is back in LantarenVenster with music from their new album Soul Woman (out February 27, 2026 via Record Kicks). Just like previous times, they will blow the roof off for sure!
Michelle David was born in North Carolina and grew up in New York. She has been singing in church since she was four, and a year later was already on stage with her first gospel group: The Mission of Love. Beyond The True-Tones, her voice has graced Broadway productions including Mama, The Sound of Motown, and Glory of Gospel, and she’s recorded with legends like Diana Ross and Michael Bolton.
The True-Tones were formed by musicians Onno Smit and Paul Willemsen, who found Michelle David to be the voice for their exploration of soul’s roots. Together, they have released seven critically acclaimed albums. Their previous LP Brothers & Sisters (2024) solidified their status as a leading force in international retro-soul. The band has earned an Edison nomination, BBC Radio 6’s Album of the Year, and regular airplay from KEXP to Craig Charles’ BBC 6 Music show. They’ve performed at major festivals including Pinkpop, North Sea Jazz, and the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Michelle David & The True-Tones let you feel and experience the power of gospel and soul. Their music takes you from Mali in West Africa, through the Caribbean to New Orleans, and on to the Mississippi Delta Blues.
