The Liminal is an audiovisual installation by Alaa Minawi, a Dutch-Lebanese-Palestinian artist based between Amsterdam and Beirut. His work ranges between performing arts and installations, where subjects like belonging, presence, absence, Arab-futurism, wars, traumas, and healing are tackled.

The Liminal is created with the notion that the present is no longer working. A group of individuals choose to leave it all and go inside a wall. There, between the pipes and the cables, they live and thrive. From time to time, they press themselves close to the surface to whisper in the ears of those who are still outside. The project tackles subjects of underground / bubbles, living in separate communities rather than one. A withdrawal from the harsh reality to recreate a world.

According to Minawi, The Liminal is still a work in progress, much like the world itself. The greater the conflict between neighbouring countries, the larger the no man’s land between them becomes. Minawi argues that – if you put all the no man’s land together – it becomes the largest state in the world. What could happen if those who no longer want to be complicit in the current reality were to claim it?

During MOMO Festival, you have the unique opportunity to participate in one of three testing sessions for The Liminal. Minawi invites small groups to experience and provide feedback on this evolving work. Each session lasts approximately 20-30 minutes, followed by a 20-minute feedback discussion. These intimate sessions accommodate just 8 participants per timeslot, creating a truly personal engagement with the installation. Sessions take place on April 18-19 at 18:00, 19:00, and 20:00.
