The simplified plot of Mary Shelley’s 1818 book Frankenstein is: man creates monster, monster is bad, man must destroy monster. But how do we deem the monster the villain when it is man who created the monster in the first place? Is it really that simple to see man as good, and monster as evil? And who gets to decide who is a monster, let alone that monsters should disappear altogether? From Wicked’s Elphaba to the recent surge in villain origin story movies, Hollywood’s flawed distinction between good v/s evil and man v/s monster has been heavily debated for years now.

Following in the footsteps of these critics, film club PEMBE presents a queer screening of the first movie adaptation of Shelley’s book, James Whale’s 1931 film Frankenstein. Originally a silent film, here it will be accompanied by a haunting live score from Rotterdam-based artist Kamiel Thomas. The film will be introduced with a small talk on the link between horror movies and queer identities, presented by film club hosts Hasret Emine and Pieter Greup.

Throughout the day there will be free food by community kitchen Het Rode Keukentje, who fight for free, accessible food for all.
