Naima Bock
Music isn’t Naima Bock’s only calling: she has degrees in gardening and archeology as well. But an educated guess of why Bock’s music sounds so unmistakable and downright magical might be because it’s not the only celestial body in her orbit. This abandon allows her to embrace styles like folk music, soul, latin, indie rock and minimalism in unmoored, disembodied fashion.
Her songwriting feels more like world-building, in that same rare vein as a Sufjan Stevens, Mount Eerie or Joanna Newsom. Bock’s debut Giant Palm and its equally stunning follow-up Below a Massive Dark Land can make upwells of instrumentation sound intimate, and quieter moments feel resounding. A singular musical voice.
“She has an innate ability for writing vocal melodies, and a spellbinding voice with which she can deliver them” – The Quietus
