Modern Woman

There’s a lot of great bands in the UK emerging right now who marry thrilling chaos with great songwriting; Modern Woman is the next talented unit knocking on the door. Noise rock, art pop, alternative folk, all seamlessly blending into stirring aural exorcisms.

The group’s vocalist/songwriter Sophie Harris met violinist and composer David Denyer. Joined by Juan Brint-Gutiérrez on bass and saxophone and Adam Blackhurst on drums, Modern Woman meshes harsh edges of folk lyricism and noise that collides with melody. Fans of Patti Smith’s Horses and Black Country, New Road’s more recent output will be smitten indeed.

Debut album Johnny’s Dreamworld digs a little deeper than what’s surveyed on the surface. Harris’s lyrics and commanding vocal delivery add a cinematic feel to it, exploring conflicting feelings and moods to forge something that feels fertile and new. Sometimes Modern Woman’s music strikes as pure survival horror, other times it’s like sinking into a warm bath of musical unorthodoxy.

“From the very first note, Modern Woman make it clear they play by their own rules, fusing post-punk grit with bold, experimental flair” – Under The Radar Magazine
