Morocco-based singer-songwriter Malak has shown remarkable depth and cunning in her musical output so far. Growing up with her father’s record collection, the 23-year old artist has been listening to music and singing her whole life. She studied music theory and classical piano at the Music Conservatory in Marrakech, and consistently started penning songs in 2018. 

Malak describes her songwriting as intuitive and desperately honest, her multicultural upbringing making her blind to the notion of genre or style. She backs those words up as well, veering between upbeat dream pop (“Heather”), big slow burning pop epics (“Simulation”, a collaboration with Salim Daïma) and haunting alternative folk (“From the Moon to Earth”) effortlessly. 

“Holy Vows” actually has a brief sequence of pure white noise, showing that Malak isn’t shy about bold experimentation either. So if it’s vows we’re speaking of, Malak is a revelation waiting to happen.
