Kaya
The sea remains a mysterious place, one where comfort and fear can coexist in harmony. With this in mind, it makes perfect sense why Juyane Kaya draws from oceanic imagery. Her debut EP is called “The Belly of the Whale” – which not-so-coincidentally echoes the famous tale of Jonah.
Moreover, Kaya’s enchanting alt-folk songs fearlessly court discomforting places and situations. The depths of depression, love, metamorphosis and belief are explored without restraint – transmuted into a deep-hued, tender voice that sounds wise beyond her years.
Kaya can swiftly sweep into higher registers, often-times to quietly devastating effect. Naturally, her thrilling live performances reflect in aching stillness and chase down vigorous tides.
