Jana Jacuka – HA
She growls. Screams. Speaks while inhaling, shifting to communication beyond words.
In everyday situations, our boundaries are often crossed, sometimes leaving us paralysed and unsure how to respond. Jana Jacuka’s solo work HA explores the performativity of laughter as an escape mechanism. In HA, the voice becomes an extension of the body. By stripping away theatrical trappings, Jana Jacuka’s solo work emphasises the raw and essential elements of performance and invites the audience to participate in the visceral experience of extreme vocal exercises. HA is an exploration of the voice as a choreographic instrument.
Jacuka is a choreographer and performer, recently graduated from the DAS Theater masters program in Amsterdam. She is curious to create performances almost out of nothing and uses her body, voice and text as the departure points. For the past two years, she has been exploring the voice and the letters H and A, investigating how the voice can become an extension of the body, creating choreography with voice and how it can move the audience.
HA received the International Bursary Award 2025 at Amsterdam Fringe Festival 2025 and was nominated by Latvian Culture Awards 100g of Culture.
“HA is bold, original, and uncompromising, with impeccable control of voice and body, creating a performance that is at once emotional, alienating, and unforgettable” – Theaterkrant
