Black Box Residency: in conversation with NÉNÉ
During the Black Box Residency NÉNÉ delves into the urgent realities surrounding anti-LGBTQ+ legislation in parts of Africa. This research builds on her time in Ghana, where she immersed herself in textile practices and symbols as living carriers of knowledge, storytelling and resistance.
In close collaboration with Ghanaian visual and fashion artists Neal Davids and Kwasi Darko, she develops a wearable artwork that enables self-expression through hidden codes embedded in fabric. Drawing from traditional techniques, contemporary fashion and speculative thinking.
During this talk the three artists speak about this collaboration. From their work together in Ghana to bringing the project into a new context in Rotterdam. They will reflect on how their distinct practices meet in a shared act of making and resistance.
This talk is moderated by Indigo Envie.
The visit of Neal Davids and Kwasi Darko is made possible by the International Visitors Programme of the Nieuwe Instituut with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
