Batik Stamp Workshop

Black Box Residency Workshop: NÉNÉ

Registration required (scroll down for the form)

How can oppressed people meet and communicate with each other in public space? Inspired by cultures and communities — including the queer community — that have historically used coded languages in textiles, this workshop invites you to design and create your own visual code language using batik and printing techniques.

Working from personal stories, symbolism and the meanings of colour, you begin with a sketch: thinking about what your garment will look like, where you’d wear it, and what your chosen colours mean. You then draw your symbol, cut it into a foam stamp, print it onto cotton fabric and deepen the meaning through textile dye. The workshop closes with a small mini-exhibition, where participants walk along each other’s work and share the stories and meanings behind what they made.

Fabric will need time to dry; participants can pick up their textile on another day of MOMO Festival or have it shipped (shipping costs not included).

Please wear old clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
