A simple guitar riff. Then: drums getting louder, a bass line, a shrill violin. And then suddenly: warm harmony singing that draws all the attention to itself, but can also disappear at any moment.
On their debut album, the London formation caroline builds a hypnotic soundscape step by step, with influences from Midwestern emo, Appalachian folk and classical minimalism. Nothing too rushed, careful improvisation. The composition of the band seems to have developed according to the same approach: what started as a trio in 2017, gradually grew into an impressive octet.
In 2019, the eight had only played five live shows, when they were noticed by the illustrious Rough Trade founder Geoff Travis. Their debut album was released on the label on February 25, 2022, but according to NME and Stereogum, among others, caroline is already one of the bands we should keep an eye on.
During the MOMO Festival in 2022 caroline will be our Artist in Residence. For now, just get to know the band a little better by listening to their songs and watch the videos below.
