Corinne Bailey Rae
British singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae was in Rotterdam in July for the Diaspora Suite concert by North Sea Jazz, together with the Metropole Orchestra, among others. More than fifteen years ago she gained fame with her soulful voice and her hit Put Your Records On. In the years that followed, the singer continued to release strong albums and collaborate with other artists, developing her own musical style. Her new album Black Rainbows was released on September 15, 2023, a very diverse record with which she has taken a completely different path, and on November 9, 2023 you can experience it with your own eyes and ears in LantarenVenster.
The new album arose from encounters with objects in the Stony Island Arts Bank museum in Chicago. Using the curated collection of black archives from America’s past, Bailey Rae explores black femininity, incantation rituals, the collapse of time, ancestors, and music as a tool for this transcendence. The singles ‘New York Transit Queen’ and ‘Peach Velvet Sky’ were released earlier this year, and are everything you didn’t expect. Think of punk but also modern dance. This will be a special evening!
“Rae deviates from the beaten track more idiosyncratically, louder and rawer than ever. She is uncompromising, opts for hard and heavy, in addition to punk there are electronic and jazzy avant-garde explorations in unfiltered light. Because of its experimentation, Black Rainbows is a record to explore for a long time. And there are also softer ‘hooks’, such as the intoxicating ‘Put It Down’.” – NRC
This concert is presented by BIRD, LantarenVenster, MOMO Concerts and Rotown. With mainly standing places and a limited number of seats on the balcony (free choice).
