Willem
Willem occupies a unique position within Dutch pop music: rooted in the generation that made Dutch-language hip-hop big, yet still closely connected to the artists shaping the genre today.
From introspective hip-hop and boundary-pushing live shows to theater, collaborations, and the Caribbean influences in his latest music, Willem continues to move between worlds, genres, and disciplines. This is precisely the common thread running through his solo career: constantly exploring who he is, where he comes from, and the form that best suits him at any given moment.
With landscape-defining albums like Man in Nood and Spuug van God, Willem has built a body of work that stands clearly apart from The Opposites, without leaving the storied history of being a vital part of the legendary Dutch hip-hop act behind.
With his third solo album Jongen van de Zon, Willem opens yet another new chapter. While his earlier solo work was often characterized by heaviness and introspection, this album reveals a freer, warmer, and more optimistic Willem. His connection to Curaçao and the island’s musical influences play a significant role in the record, in which he further explores his quest for heritage, identity, and freedom.
“His lyrics are filled with intriguing poetry about growing up with roots in different worlds, finding a new form of masculinity, and trying to figure out who you really are” – 3voor12
