Dermot Henry
Dermot Henry already has big fans in former touring mates Lewis Capaldi and Kingfishr, and it’s easy to understand why. Henry brings out a boyish charm, enthusiasm and vulnerability to his ceaselessly entertaining, lived-in songs.
Raised on his folks’ record collection, Henry traded his halcyon Wiltshire stomping grounds to study in Paris for a year, where the busking bug got to him quite permanently. One day he walked in a bar to watch a stranger play Elizabeth Cotten’s ‘Freight Train’. As they forgot the words, Dermot Henry jumped up on stage to finish the tune together.
That type of infectious impulsiveness can be heard in all his songs, they feel more like vivid snapshots of living life instead of homing in on one particular story or subject. Henry’s EP, Aiming Torches At The Sun, recorded in Frome with Dom Monks (Big Thief, Michael Kiwanuka, Laura Marling), further explores his natural gift for churning out intimate, cheeky and heartfelt tunes.
“Building a dedicated fanbase in the process, his work – swoon-some of melody, yet cutting of lyric – comes straight from the heart” – CLASH Magazine
