Luwten’s music playfully ponders the relationship between inner imagination and the outer world. 

A noise heard from an open window, or a heartbeat from within; composer and songwriter Tessa Douwstra embraces such fragmentary elements to create expressive, emotionally-charged folktronica and alternative pop. For Luwten, a field recording or ambient sound often-times forms the foundation for a beautiful melody.

The blueprint of Luwten is what Douwstra calls her personal trinity: the minimalism of composers such as Steve Reich, the experimental songwriting and arranging of artists like Solange and Bon Iver, and finally the electro-acoustic productions of acts such as Floating Points. Recently released songs ‘o pen bro ken’ and ‘used to be o lder’ mark Luwten’s direction for her next album, inspired in part by orchestras tuning, ambient music and the warm crackle of tape loops.
