With their enchanting blend of electronica, art pop, afropop, saudade and alternative Latin, Ão have grown into one of the most exciting acts on the Belgian music scene. The four-piece defy neat genre labels, fusing their different backgrounds into a singular hybrid sound, in the spirit of Stromae, Rosalía and C. Tangana.
Frontwoman Brenda Corijn draws on her Mozambican-Portuguese roots, singing in Portuguese and English. Her warm voice intertwines with Siebe Chau’s southern-inflected guitar playing, Jolan Decaestecker’s layered electronics and Bert Peyffers’ eclectic percussion. Live, Ão are an electrifying experience, moving from fragile melodies to danceable beats in a hypnotic world where you never quite know where any given sound is coming from. The band also played an amazing show at Club Sahara during the MOMO Festival 2025.
Their second album Malandra marked their breakthrough: glowing reviews, a sold-out Ancienne Belgique, a sold-out club tour and more than 80 shows across Europe. On 16 April 2027, the Malandra story will be completed with Obra, Portuguese for ‘work’ or ‘creation’: five new songs born during the same period that bring the story of the malandra to its conclusion – a woman who moves through life with humour, charm and cunning, writing her own rules. The first single, ‘Sofrimento’, arrives on 6 October 2026. A reworking of a song by Angolan singer Waldemar Bastos, it has been a fixture in Ão’s live set since the band’s earliest days in 2019.
This concert is presented by LantarenVenster, Rotown, and MOMO Concerts.
