Rotterdam-based artist Serana Angelista embodies MOMO’s spirit of wonder and discovery with their work that transforms places and spaces with vibrant inventive designs: “All I want is to experiment, to find something new that opens yet another door. When that happens, I completely go for it.”
Influenced by their Dutch-Curaçaoan background, Angelista’s work is characterized by the never ending search for Africanisms within Caribbean culture. A quest they hope leads back home. For their visuals they combine deep memory with research. Connecting their own memories with research creates speculative designs towards a new aesthetical understanding of the creation of Blackness in the ‘new-world’. By creating visual representation for people that are often left out in the Dutch graphic design tradition, their work aims to celebrate multiperspectivity, create social awareness, and contribute to the democratisation of graphic design.
