You may know drummer Betamax and keyboardist Danalogue from The Comet is Coming, the great London jazz trio that also includes saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings (Sons of Kemet, Shabaka and the Ancestors). Under the name Soccer96, the two have been playing together for much longer: their debut album was released in 2012.
Last year Soccer96 signed with the label Moshi Moshi. The first single that the men released afterwards revealed a new, more socially engaged direction for the duo. “I was gonna fight fascism / I was just a bit tired,” read the song’s sarcasm-soaked lyrics.
Dopamine, Soccer96’s recently released fourth album, continues that line and has a dystopian edge. That may sound a bit disconsolate, but nothing could be further from the truth: the cosmic prog-jazz of Betamax and Danalogue remains just as danceable as their previous work.
