Meskerem Mees & Spinvis
24 april 2021
In the Netherlands, the sweet pop songs of Meskerem Mees are still a well-kept secret, but with our southern neighbors, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter was already very successful in a short time. With her debut single “Joe” she conquered the Belgian airwaves, and in 2020 she won Humo’s Rock Rally – an unmistakable stamp of approval.
On stage, Mees is only accompanied by her acoustic guitar and cellist / singer Febe Lazou, giving her enchanting voice the space it deserves. That this results in the most intimate performances – even via a livestream – she already showed this year during Eurosonic Noorderslag.
During MOMO’s Create & Perform program, Meskerem Mees takes us on a visual tour of her hometown Ghent. In which places can she always count on an inspiration boost? How did the city shape her? And what influence does the environment have on its creative process? The final stop of the tour: a performance in a cozy Ghent café – the very first place where Meskerem Mees was allowed to climb the stage.
Mees does not take on this adventure alone: during the walk she is accompanied by none other than Spinvis, perhaps the Netherlands’ favorite troubadour and attic room musician. Its place in the Dutch pop landscape is like a micro city – its own universe with its own frame of reference. And his music is like handwriting: a personal seal that no one can copy one hundred percent. When it comes to inspiration and musical creation, we can hardly imagine a better conversation partner.
