Debbie [cancelled]
Every year MOMO Festival showcases the next generation of international talents, and here’s one who is ready to take over contemporary r’n’b. Vocalist and songwriter Debbie sings for a generation who is not shy about tricky topics like the representation of love, mental health and toxic relationships. Her tender voice swings between bedroom neo-soul and spectacular grand pop, with a pure sense of melody that has the earmarks of Sampha and Adele. Debbie’s endearing songwriting already made her shine at the prestigious Later… with Jools Holland show and as co-writer for the labelmate Stormzy.
Clash Magazine about Debbie’s single All Night Long: “It is a tender piece of songwriting, at once classic and soulful but also fresh and vivid. The sound of a young woman speaking her truth, it comes from a self-admitted “dark place” in which Debbie tries to break destructive cycles.” REVIEW OF ‘ALL NIGHT LONG’ BY “CLASH MAGAZINE”
“The star of the show, however, is the quiet confidence of Debbie’s delivery. Curiously, though, the song is actually about her insecurities, with the lyric discussing social anxiety.” REVIEW OF ‘CHERRY WINE’ BY “CLASH MAGAZINE”
“‘Cousin’s Car’, premiering below, is Debbie’s latest and sees her tapping into a nostalgic vibe as she recalls being “stuck in circles” as things get tough at home and the need to get away presses on her more and more. She turns to someone close who has promised her that escape route, courtesy of their cousin’s car.” REVIEW OF ‘COUSIN’S CAR’ BY “THE FADER”
