Warhaus stands as the solo endeavor of Maarten Devoldere, one of the creative forces behind Flemish indie-pop favorites, Balthazar. Balthazar always engaged in a, relatively speaking, democratic creative process, whereas Warhaus is the opposite. With Warhaus, Devoldere deliberately unleashes his ego to take more creative risks. To shape his own vision, he enlisted several Flemish musicians for his first two albums – We F*cked a Flame into Being (2016) and Warhaus (2017), including vocalist Sylvie Kreutsch (Soldier’s Heart) and co-producer Jasper Maekelberg (Faces On TV).

The results are spiky, voluptuous pop songs in the vein of Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg and Nick Cave, in which Devoldere cleverly hides all sorts of stylistic elements, such as trip-hop, African rhythms and electronica. In live settings, Warhaus creates a special contrast: in terms of sound, the music exudes lived-in romanticism, while the performance and instrumentation highlight progressive practices.

Devoldere is a true regular motel guest: we have already welcomed him to Rotterdam several times, both as Warhaus and with Balthazar, at MOMO Festival and for MOMO Concerts. Goose bumps time and time again! He now returns to the Maassilo, this time armed with his latest creation, ‘Ha Ha Heartbreak’ (released on November 11, 2022).

This concert is organized in collaboration with Rotown and LantarenVenster.
